Dear Parishioners,
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones healthy and well.
In light of the current coronavirus pandemic, our primary concern is the spiritual and physical health and welfare of the faithful and all those who serve our parishes. We also recognize that we have a duty to care for those among us who are most vulnerable.
These dual concerns reflect everyone’s need for safety, while at the same time supporting those who need it most. While the financial circumstances of many families in our parish are uncertain, for those who are able we ask for your support of our Church. The Annual Catholic Appeal launches this weekend, and since our services are limited in the number who gather in person, there is an online giving option at annualcatholicappeal.com.
While challenging days remain, we also recognize this opportunity to be truly present to one another and care for those who are struggling. May we continue to pray for all those affected by COVID-19, those who are caring for the sick and for each other.
Yours in Christ,
Monsignor Jim Kaczorowski

Estimados Feligreses,

Confirmation – Options for Going to Confession

An important part of preparing to be Confirmed (or receiving other sacraments like Communion, Marriage or Holy Orders) is making sure that you have no past sins standing between you and God at the moment of Confirmation.  This means going to confession, which is receiving God’s forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In an ordinary year, we would have a short retreat to prepare you for going to Reconciliation and then have a couple of priests help out to hear everyone’s confession in one evening.  Unfortunately, we cannot do that this year.  So each student preparing for Confirmation is asked to, at a time convenient to them before their Confirmation date, go to confession at an available time, either in this parish or in another parish which may be closer to home.

  1. Make sure you have worked through the lesson materials for the “Purify My Heart” lesson on FlipGrid the week of February 8.
  2. Check out the table of Reconciliation options below.  Consult with your parents of when and where might be a good opportunity for you. Sign up using that church’s website or phone number.
  3. Plan how you will get there, if you need to figure out where to park and what door to enter through (because you have never been there before, or because things may be different during the pandemic).
  4. Be sure to keep your appointment with God!  You can bring your Reconciliation prayer service booklet with you so that you have the form to use (on the back cover) and the Act of Contrition to pray it with the priest during your confession.

Our Lady of Lourdes Benefit Concert

What: Awakening Concert benefiting the Our Lady of Lourdes Soup Kitchen
When: Friday, February 12, 2021 at 7:00 pm CST
“AWAKENING” happens when passion meets purpose.
On Friday, Feb 12, 2021 at 7 p.m. our AWAKENING  Concert will combine music and imagery for the purpose of supporting our Soup Kitchen of Our Lady of Lourdes parish. The concert will feature a World Premiere of a Latin orchestral piece written by Julian Molina Abad and conducted by Sam Sharp. We will also be gifted by the Gospel Choir of St. Agatha parish as well as our own soloist Jennifer Carlin.
Fr. Michael Shanahan and Johanna Ortegon will present a variation of the Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto on two pianos. This virtual concert will be testimony to the power that is created when passion unites with purpose. Our ultimate sense of purpose and passion comes from Christ.
Thank God for the faith that leads us forward.

Naming Our New Parish

Online Form in English to suggest names

Dear parishioners,Monsignor Jim in front of a Christmas Tree

Our parish’s temporary name since we united on August 1, 2020 has been Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Parish. Since then, we have been working on aligning our finances and operations so that we can continue to be good stewards and support our ministries. In late January we will begin celebrating regular Masses at only one site, in the building still to be known as Queen of Angels Church, to better unite our practice of prayer and our people even in the midst of this pandemic. The St. Matthias Church building will remain available for a time for the use of St. Matthias School and perhaps for funerals. Queen of Angels School will continue as the school for our new parish.

These buildings are a treasured part of our legacy, but as a parish we are more than our buildings. Truly, a parish is the people. And so, as we grow together into one parish family, I invite you to participate actively in the next step forward: choosing a new name for our parish.

The Gospel reading from this Fourth Sunday of Advent tells the story of the Annunciation, of the angel Gabriel saying, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus” (Luke 1:30-31). The Hebrew meaning of the name Jesus is “God saves.” This name is a clear expression of both the identity and mission of God’s own Son sent to live among us.

What a wonderful Gospel to begin the process of naming our united parish, through which we will seek a name that captures our own mission and identity as a community. A new patron saint would give us a fresh example of how to live as disciples and allow us to celebrate a new feast day together. Our new name should give us a unique identity among the parishes of the Archdiocese and inspire a missionary spirit in our community.

After prayer and reflection, the members of our community are invited to offer potential names for our united parish, using the online form available in English and Spanish, or to call in to the parish office at 773-539-7510 during the week (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). You may wish to do research on the internet or through your spiritual reading before you complete the form, and some online resources are available at the form link. Your suggestions and especially the reasons for your suggestions are important to the process, even if that suggestion is to retain the temporary name.

As we gather suggestions and discern which names we will put forward for consideration, we need to remain open to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Our suggestions for names will probably be as different as the parishioners offering them, as each person gives a unique perspective. May the Spirit work in each of us as well as through the Renew My Church Commission, Episcopal Council and our Archbishop to whom our best options will be submitted. Cardinal Cupich will make the final decision on our new parish name.

In the Annunciation, Mary affirms the confidence that God has in her to fulfill the role for which she was created, free of original sin, to be the Mother of God and share Jesus with the world. Our new name will be a daily reminder to us to be who this new parish community has been created to be, and our care in the process of choosing a new name will affirm our hope in our future as a community of faith. Let us continue to take up the work God has laid before us, to serve each person without exception and according to their needs, and to build up our corner of God’s kingdom here in Lincoln Square.

As Christmas draws near, let us pray that Christ be born in us, allowing his love to shine through us.

Wishing you a blessed Christmas and a hope-filled New Year,

Monsignor Jim Kaczorowski
Pastor, Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Parish

Queridos feligreses,
