Religious Education Update

2020-2021 Religious Education registration became available on September 12.
Please click here for online registration forms, schedules,
payments and other important information!

Please register now for our children’s Religious Education classes:

  • Sunday CCD classes (Kindergarten through Gr. 7 or 1st Year Confirmation Prep), for children not already attending a Catholic School
  • Monday Confirmation classes (Gr. 8 or 2nd Year Confirmation Prep), which includes students who have completed CCD classes through Level 7 / 1st Year Confirmation Prep, as well as Gr. 8 students in Queen of Angels School

We would like to close registration by mid-October but may be able to make exceptions due to the unusual nature of this year.

In light of the pandemic and the recent merger of the parishes, we have worked hard to adapt our Religious Education plans for the Fall. Remote learning is the safest and least complicated option for the Fall semester, though we will reassess to see what programming we will be able to offer from January to the end of the year. Children learning from home is an opportunity to take a more family-centered approach to faith formation, giving parents the tools they need to share faith and have important conversations with their children. Class materials are based on FlipGrid.com and live class sessions meet on Zoom.

The Archdiocese has provided reopening guidelines for Religious Education and Youth Ministry programs. These guidelines and the needs of our newly unified community have shaped our plans. Email parish@queenofangelschicago.org if you have questions.

SPRED Tootsie Roll Drive

The annual Tootsie Roll Drive to collect funds to support SPRED centers throughout the Archdiocese and in particular for our Parish. This will take place this coming Saturday/Sunday – Sept. 19th/20th.

With the counsel of Monsignor Kaczorowski, it has been decided not to post our volunteers on the streets on Friday & Saturday.  Instead, we will be in front of each church following all of the Masses.  There will be a table with a basket of Tootsie Rolls for your enjoyment and a couple of cans to place your donation.   There will be a couple of volunteers as well wearing aprons and holding donation cans.   We will be masked and honoring social distancing.  In these challenging times we need to adapt.  However, we cannot cancel because these donations are a valuable support to the SPRED ministry.  With your help we can respond to the expenses of our program as we work tirelessly to envision our way back to hosting sessions for our Friends with special needs who miss their communities so very much.

One other GREAT NEED at this time is the discovery of more volunteers to partner with each of the Friends in our 3 SPRED communities.  Because of the pandemic, we have lost some of our volunteers.  We are especially hoping for younger people perhaps under the age of 65.  Please know that we do not reject anyone over that age as well.  The call is warmly extended to both men and women from all of our SPRED Friends and their partners.   Thank you.

For more information contact Julia Hess 773-539-7510 or 773-680-9225.  For more information visit our Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Parish SPRED website.

GiveCentral Meets Parish Needs

During these unprecedented times, we urge our parishioners to use GiveCentral to support our parish. The business of the parish continues even if the offices remain closed to the public and the churches cautiously reopen. Thank you to those who have, in the recent past, made new gifts or continued donations through GiveCentral.

GiveCentral is a secure online system where parishioners create individual giving profiles with payment options ranging from direct debit (ACH) to credit cards. Every transaction is securely recorded and saved in your own payment history. Thank you to the increasing number of parishioners now making donations through our online donation service. By giving electronically, your regular gifts can be made consistently and easily as you continue to support our Catholic community. Donations can also be made on a one-time basis without creating a profile. It is convenient for parishioners, reduces the risks associated with transporting checks or cash, and makes it easier for the parish to budget for the future.

On GiveCentral you can sign up to give separate donations in different events (categories or buckets), similar to using different envelopes for second collections.  Once you locate Queen of Angels Parish or St. Matthias Parish on the GiveCentral.org website, choose an event or click “View More” to find additional event:

  • Sunday Collection (Q of A) or Weekly Offertory (St.M): Supports your parish church as you normally would through an offering each week at Sunday Mass.
  • Lyman Fund Donation (Q of A): Enables children to remain in our parish school during a financial hardship.
  • St. Vincent de Paul Donation: Normally at the holiday Mass on Labor Day and other national holidays, for the needs of the poor in our community.
  • Holy Land (April) (Q of A) or Holy Land Collection (St. M): Normally on Good Friday in support of Christians living in the Holy Land. The weekend of September 12-13 offers a second chance to give.

No matter how you choose to support the parish, thank you for your continuing participation in our mission.

Catholic Charities Special Collection

We were not able to gather in church on Mother’s Day weekend, when the second collection would have been for Catholic Charities to help the mothers, children, and seniors in Cook and Lake Counties who are struggling. In these difficult times, Catholic Charities is still hard at work feeding the hungry via food pantries and meal programs; visiting seniors to offer vital homemaker services; coordinating housing and case management for the homeless and survivors of domestic violence; and checking in with counseling patients who may need extra help coping.

This weekend, August 29-30, presents another chance to support these Works of Mercy. If you are able, you may contribute online via GiveCentral or Catholic Charities web site; through your offering envelope and the mailbox at the parish office or offering box at church; or by mailing your check directly to Catholic Charities at 721
N. LaSalle St, Chicago, IL 60454. Thank you for your help.
