SPRED is our parish ministry including friends with special needs. In this time of uncertainty and stress, we all hunger for a place of peace and friendship. We need to find a way to sort out the chaos and find new hope. We need to realize the joy of “God With Us.” SPRED gives participants a special little corner to reflect and renew.
As with most ministries of Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Parish, SPRED will be starting back slowly this year. Due to the challenges of the pandemic, our volunteers are working hard to redefine our meeting space and program so that we are prepared for a safe return. The health and age profile of some of our catechists and friends with special needs will make it difficult for a return.
And so we face a challenge of recruitment as well. We will need some of our younger (under 65) adult parishioners to help us rebuild our SPRED communities so that we have a partner for each of our friends. We are most likely looking for at least 6 new volunteers for our 3 faith communities. The format is simple and rewarding. It is not a teaching method, and training is provided right here at the Parish Center at 4412 N. Western — this year, training will probably be in the form of a simple tutorial process.
